Peru: Miners to protests in several cities, Dec. 13
Miners to protest in Lima, Cusco, and Arequipa, Peru, Dec. 13. Localized disruptions, heightened security likely.
Event
National Federation of Mining Workers (Federacion Nacional de Trabajadores Mineros) plan to protest in multiple urban centers, Dec. 13. The action is in response and in opposition to the planned suspension of operations at several mining sites. The primary gathering will be at Plaza San Martin in Lima starting at 09:00. Miners will also gather in Arequipa and Cusco; however, precise gathering locations and start times are unclear.
Security forces will likely deploy to monitor gatherings. Outside of Lima, protests are likely in prominent public squares, city centers, and near government buildings and mining sites. Localized ground travel disruptions are likely near all gathering points. Clashes between protesters and the police are possible if demonstrators ignore security force orders to disperse.
Advice
Avoid all protests as a standard precaution. Plan for delays near gathering areas. Heed the directives of local officials. Do not cross protester roadblocks until police have cleared them.
