Updated reports indicate multiple aftershocks, including a magnitude-5.1 temblor, following a magnitude-7.3 offshore earthquake in the Flores Sea at around 11:20 WITA Dec. 14. The earthquake's epicenter was about 95 km (59 miles) north of Maumere, Sikka Regency, East Nusa Tenggara Province in eastern Indonesia at a depth of about 76 km (47 miles).

Officials lifted an initial tsunami alert after confirming no significant tsunami threat from the earthquake; subsequent reports indicate the detection of 7-cm (3-inch) waves in Marapokot, Nagakeo Regency, and Reo, Manggarai Regency in East Nusa Tenggara Province. Additional aftershocks are likely in the coming days, and any severe shaking could trigger further tsunami alerts.

There have been no immediate reports of damage or casualties due to the earthquake; however, some damage is possible, especially in East Nusa Tenggara Province. It could take several hours until authorities can conduct comprehensive damage assessments, especially in remote areas.
