Heightened security is likely in Nasiriyah after security forces forcibly dispersed an anti-government demonstration in the city early afternoon Dec. 22. At least three people were shot and injured when police intervened against the demonstrators, who had blocked a road near government offices with burning objects. The purpose of the gathering was to protest lawsuits against activists. Nasiriyah is approximately 160 km (100 miles) northwest of Basra.

Localized ground travel disruptions are also likely near the protest area. Further related protests and clashes are also possible in the coming days.
