Further protests and clashes are likely in Tafawa Balewa town, Bauchi State, in the coming days following unrest Dec. 30. The purpose of the demonstrations was to oppose planned commemorations to late Sayawa Baba Peter Gonto scheduled Dec. 31. Supporters of the memorial events reportedly attacked the protesters, resulting in clashes that left three people dead and several others injured.

Security forces will almost certainly deploy to any additional demonstrations that occur. Localized transport disruptions and further clashes between demonstrators and supporters of the event are likely.
