Emergency crews are responding to a Korea Train eXpress (KTX) derailment along the Gyeongbu line near Yeongdong Tunnel in Hoedong-ri area, Yeongdong County, North Chungcheong Province as of 12:46 Jan. 5. The incident occurred between Yeongdong and Gimcheon Gumi stations after a steel structure in the tunnel fell and collided with the train. Reports indicate that the train was bound for Busan. Officials have confirmed at least seven injuries from the accident.
KTX service disruptions are likely between Yeongdong and Gimcheon Gumi stations and along the Gyeongbu line through at least Jan. 5. Increased demand for alternative transport is possible. Heightened security measures will likely prompt localized road transport disruptions in the surrounding area.
The incident site is approximately 22km (14 miles) southeast of Daejeon.
