Tsunami advisory in place along west coast of South Island and east and north coasts of North Island, New Zealand, as of Jan. 16

Warning

Event

New Zealand's National Emergency Management Agency has issued a National Advisory for the west coast of South Island as of Jan. 16, warning of tsunami activity, particularly strong and unusual currents and surges at the shore. Similar advisories remain in effect for the north and east coasts of the North Island and the Chatham Islands. The warning is in response to a volcanic eruption at Hunga-Tonga-Hunga-Ha'pai in Tonga the previous day. Officials are advising that people in or near the sea should move out of the water, off beaches, and away from rivers, harbors, rivers, and estuaries. The full advisory is available by clicking here. Authorities will likely amend the advisory in the coming hours or days.

Advice

Move away from the immediate coastline; tsunamis can be long-duration events, and the threat may persist for hours. Heed the directives of the local authorities.
