Gunfire reported at military barracks in multiple areas across Burkina Faso Jan. 23. Possible attempted coup underway. Take shelter.

Critical

Event

Local reports indicate gunfire has occurred at multiple military barracks nationwide Jan. 23, including at Camp General Baba Sy and Camp Sangoule Lamizana in the capital Ouagadougou, and at barracks in the cities of Kaya and Ouahigouya. It is unconfirmed if the gunfire is related to a coup attempt by soldiers; a recently released government statement has acknowledged the gunfire at military barracks but has denied any takeover of the country by the military. No further details are available. There have been no reports of casualties.

Extremely tight security is almost certain in Ouagadougou and the surrounding areas through at least Jan. 23. Authorities will almost certainly implement movement restrictions, potentially including curfews, and could restrict telecommunications. Clashes between loyalist and mutinous military units could occur with little-to-no warning.

Further protests by civilian activists are possible over the coming days regardless of the outcome of the events of Jan. 23, following well-attended protests Jan. 22.

Severe transport disruptions are likely until the situation stabilizes. Militant groups operating in Burkina Faso may seek to exploit the confusion in the capital by carrying out attacks against security forces.

Advice

If operating in Burkina Faso, shelter in place until the security dynamic stabilizes and the situation becomes clear. Strictly avoid government buildings, security installations, large concentrations of police and soldiers, or any protests that may materialize. Maintain contact with your diplomatic mission.
