Peru: Activists call for nationwide protests Jan. 27

The Free Peru National Political Party has called for a nationwide protest Jan. 27. Participants will demand that an energy firm lose its license to operate in the country due to its alleged responsibility in a recent major oil spill. In Lima, protesters will gather from 17:00 at Plaza San Martin. The location and times for gatherings in other cities have not been confirmed. Likely locations for protests include main plazas, avenues, and government buildings.

Authorities will almost certainly deploy increased security near all gatherings. Localized transport disruptions are likely for the duration of the actions. Activists may also attempt to block major road routes. On Jan. 22, hundreds of activists, including local fishermen, blocked the North Pan-American Highway near the entrance to Ancon in response to the oil spill. Activists could stage further protests in the coming days.
