A magnitude-6.5 earthquake occurred in the southwest of the Loreto region, Peru, at around 10:58 PET Feb. 3. The epicenter was about 51 km (32 miles) northwest of Barranca. The tremor occurred at a depth of about 100 km (62 miles); weak-to-light shaking was reported throughout much of northern Peru and southeastern Ecuador, with moderate shaking likely being experienced near the epicenter. There have been no initial reports of damage or casualties as a result of the earthquake; however, some degree of damage to infrastructure is likely near the epicenter. It could take several hours until authorities can conduct comprehensive damage assessments, especially in remote areas. Moderate aftershocks are likely over the coming days.

Officials may temporarily shut down transportation infrastructure in the tremor zone to check for damage. Minor disruptions could occur during shutdowns, but service will likely resume quickly if no damage is found. Utility outages are possible, particularly near the earthquake's epicenter.
