New Caledonia: Unionized education workers threaten to strike territorywide from Feb. 14

Unionized public educators threaten to strike in New Caledonia from Feb. 14. Protests, increased security possible.

Informational

Event

The Federation of Civil Servants has warned that education workers will launch an indefinite strike in New Caledonia from Feb. 14 if the government does not make progress on their demands by Feb. 11. The union is demanding benefits for support staff in schools. Unless averted, the labor action will impact boarding schools, high schools, and colleges in the territory, though the union has stated it may vary the action by province.

Protests are possible if the strike goes forward. Education workers could hold demonstrations near government offices in Noumea and other town centers in the territory. Rallies could attract dozens to several hundred people.

Security personnel will likely monitor gatherings if any occur. Localized transport disruptions are possible, mainly if protesters march near rally sites.

Advice

Exercise caution near announced protest sites as a precaution. Follow all security personnel instructions. Allow additional time to reach destinations, especially in central Noumea.
