Increased security and business closures likely in Iraqi Kurdistan and Iran during Nowruz holiday March 21-24. Avoid large gatherings.

Nowruz ("New Day"), the Persian New Year and a national secular holiday in Iraqi Kurdistan and Iran, will be observed March 21-24. Millions of people throughout Iraqi Kurdistan and Iran will participate in Nowruz celebrations.
Authorities will likely increase security measures to manage celebratory events. Gatherings could prompt ground travel disruptions. Disruptions to commercial and business operations are possible as many government offices, businesses, and foreign diplomatic missions in Iraqi Kurdistan and Iran will likely be closed March 21. Disruptions may persist through late March and into early April as many people celebrate Nowruz for as many as 13 days.
In Iraqi Kurdistan, militants, including from the Islamic State (IS), could stage attacks against participants as they consider Nowruz a non-Islamic celebration.

Avoid all large public gatherings as a precaution. Limit exposure to potential terror targets, including Nowruz celebration venues, police and military installations, and major government buildings.
