Further public transport disruptions possible in Wellington, New Zealand, through late March. Delays, traffic congestion likely.

Informational

Event

Further public transport disruptions are possible in Wellington through late March amid increased COVID-19 activity. Metlink canceled at least 441 bus services and suspended train operations on the Johnsonville Line March 10 due to a lack of staffing. The public transport operator added that further disruptions are possible as it expects more staff to be infected with COVID-19 in the Greater Wellington Region. Additionally, Interislander Cook Strait ferry has reduced the frequency of its services because of crew shortages.

Public bus, train, and ferry service disruptions may lead to increased demand for alternative transport, including taxis and private cars. Increased traffic congestion is possible and will likely continue for the duration of the public transport disruptions.

Advice

Arrange alternative transport as necessary. Confirm taxis and other transport reservations, as demand may be high. Allow additional time for ground transport throughout Wellington.
