New Caledonia: Unionized SLN workers launch indefinite strike in several locations territorywide March 31

Unionized SLN workers striking in several locations of New Caledonia as of March 31. Production disruptions possible.

Informational

Event

Mineworkers affiliated with the Federation of New Caledonian Workers Union (CSTNC) have launched an indefinite strike at several SLN mines in the territory as of March 31. CSTNC called the action to protest the company's lack of consultation with workers as it signed an agreement that increased nickel ore output. Reports indicate that participation in the labor action is uneven; approximately 25 percent of staff at SLN's Kouaoua mine are taking part in the strike. However, work has virtually stopped at mines in Thio and Tiebaghi. As of March 31, there are no significant disruptions at the Doniambo factory.

Workers could demonstrate at main entrances to SLN facilities. Protesters have blocked roads during previous labor actions in the sector, impending shipments. Violence cannot be ruled out, particularly if authorities attempt to thwart demonstrations or disband roadblocks.

Advice

Avoid the area near the affected mines due to the potential for protests and clashes. Use caution if operating in Tiebaghi, Thio, and Kouaoua.
