Civil society groups have called for protests in Dakar and Louga, Louga Department, April 15. Participants will denounce alleged medical negligence following the death of a pregnant woman at the Ahmadou Sakhir Mbayin Hospital of Louga.

  • In Dakar, a sit-in is scheduled at the Place de l'Obelisque (also called Place de la Nation) from 10:00.

  • In Louga, participants will gather from 10:00 at the Montagne neighborhood and then march towards Ahmadou Sakhir Mbayin Hospital. The event is slated to end at 13:00.

Thousands may attend the aforementioned events, likely causing road transport delays in the vicinity of the gatherings. Police forces will likely deploy to monitor the protests. Clashes cannot be ruled out. The Health Ministry (Ministere de la Sante et de l'Action Sociale) launched an inquiry to determine the cause of death and responsibilities to quell popular anger. However, a prolonged and wider movement may persist if the government fails to address the grievances.
