New Caledonia: Protests possible territorywide denouncing rising cost of living through at least mid-May

Protests possible in New Caledonia opposing increasing living costs through mid-May. Increased security likely; disruptions possible.

Informational

Event

Protests are possible in New Caledonia through at least mid-May to denounce rising living costs and shortages of essential goods. Residents have held protests in recent weeks, especially in Noumea. The most recent protest occurred near the Government of New Caledonia building in Noumea April 16 and involved several dozen people. Additional protests are possible in other cities and towns near government buildings, though the largest protests will likely occur in Noumea.

Security personnel will likely monitor protests and may try to break up gatherings if they are disruptive. While violence is unlikely, minor skirmishes cannot be completely ruled out. Protests may prompt localized transport disruptions on roadways near the protest site.

Advice

Avoid protests due to possible skirmishes. If scuffles break out, leave the area immediately. Follow all security personnel instructions
