Second round of French presidential election scheduled for April 24. Rallies, associated clashes between rival activists possible.

Informational

Event

The second round of the French presidential election is scheduled to occur April 24. Demonstrations are possible ahead of and after the election. Clashes at gatherings or confrontations between rival political supporters are possible, particularly as results begin to be released around 20:00 April 24.

A demonstration denouncing both candidates is planned at Place du Chatelet in Paris from 20:00 April 24. Authorities in Rennes have banned demonstrations planned for April 24 due to violence and property damage carried out by activists at election-related demonstrations during the first round of voting April 10. Activists denouncing far-right ideology have staged regular demonstrations in several locations throughout the campaign and are likely to protest against candidate Marine Le Pen (Rassemblement National party) around election day. In the event Le Pen wins, the potential for large-scale demonstrations and clashes between rival activists is elevated.

Security forces will likely deploy to monitor related events and safeguard election-related sites. Localized disruptions are likely near any gatherings that occur.

Context

Voters will choose between incumbent Emmanuel Macron and Marine Le Pen, the two candidates who received the most votes following the first round of elections on April 10. Current opinion polls suggest that Macron is likely to win the election.

Advice

Avoid election-related events and protests, and exercise caution near polling stations and counting centers. If violence erupts nearby, immediately depart the area and seek shelter in a nongovernmental building. Heed all official security advisories.
