Moldova: Bulgarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs warns against travel to Moldova as of April 29

Bulgaria issues advisory warning against travel to Moldova due to deteriorating security situation as of April 29.

Informational

Event

The Bulgarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has warned its citizens against travel to Moldova as of April 29 due to the deteriorating situation in the country, a likely reference to recent security incidents in the breakaway region of Transnistria and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Bulgaria specifically advised its citizens who are in Moldova to immediately leave by any available means.

Context

The Moldovan government and de facto authorities in Transnistria have each introduced elevated security measures in response to a spate of security incidents in the separatist-controlled region, including explosions and cross-border gunfire from Ukraine. No group has claimed responsibility for the suspected attacks but Moldovan authorities believe they are an attempt to elevate tensions and destabilize the security situation with respect to Transnistria.

Advice

Exercise caution if operating in Moldova, including around government buildings, security installations, and military outposts; reconsider any travel to the Transnistria region. Maintain contact with your diplomatic mission.
