A rocket attack reportedly targeted the Kawergosk oil refinery, located northwest of Erbil in Khabat District, May 1. Authorities quickly brought the ensuing fire that ignited in one of the refinery's tanks under control; the attack, which was comprised of six rockets fired from Nineveh Governorate, resulted in minor material damage to the facility and no casualties. Security forces reportedly discovered a launchpad and defused multiple missiles in the Nineveh Plain following the attack. No group immediately claimed responsibility for the incident.

Heightened security is likely around the refinery over the coming days. Additional rocket attacks are possible in Khabat District over the short term.

Context

A similar attack was reported April 6, when three projectiles landed in the vicinity of the refinery; the incident caused no casualties.

Monitor local media and abide by security forces' directives. If incoming artillery fire is reported, stay indoors, away from windows or exterior walls. If possible, move to a ground floor or basement.
