Chad: Nationwide protest by unemployed graduates planned on May 4

Unemployed graduates plan to protest across Chad May 4. Heightened security, localized disruptions likely; clashes possible.

Informational

Event

A civil society group representing unemployed graduates has called for a nationwide protest from 06:00 May 4. Organizers plan to demand that authorities hire 5,000 young people in the public service. Participants will likely gather in main urban centers such as N'Djamena. During a similar event April 13, protesters marched between the Chagoua and Dembe market areas of the capital.

Authorities will almost certainly deploy heightened security to organized gatherings that occur. Localized transport disruptions are likely in the vicinity of demonstrations. Clashes with security forces cannot be ruled out.

Advice

Avoid protests as a standard precaution. Keep away from any areas where security forces appear to be deploying; leave the area at the first sign of any confrontation. Allow extra time to reach destinations across the country May 4.
