Informational

Event

The inauguration of president-elect Yoon Suk-yeol will occur in front of the National Assembly in Yeouido, Seoul, from 11:00 May 10. Around 41,000 people including South Korean leaders, former presidents, and high-ranking foreign dignitaries, will attend the event. Former President Park Geun-hye, who was previously impeached and removed from office over an influence-peddling scandal, will be present. Related events will also take place at other locations in Seoul.

Opposition groups may hold demonstrations ahead of and during the inauguration. Gatherings are possible near National Assembly and at public squares and government buildings. While most gatherings are expected to pass off peacefully, security personnel could attempt to disperse any protests that materialize.

Authorities will likely set up roadblocks around National Assembly ahead of and during the inauguration May 10. Authorities could also increase security measures near other government buildings like Blue House and the presidential office in Yongsan District. Heightened security measures may prompt road transport disruptions, including routes to and from Incheon International Airport (ICN) as dignitaries arrive and depart.

Advice

Avoid inauguration-related events in Seoul to minimize potential disruptions May 10; keep away from areas where security personnel appear to be deploying. Heed all instructions from local authorities and allow additional time to reach destinations near locations where demonstrations or other gatherings may take place.
