Protesters are blockading the railway line between Cusco and Machu Picchu as of May 20. PeruRail has suspended services on the line until the situation is resolved. The demonstrators from Comite de Lucha de Comunidades de Machu Picchu (Community of Struggle for the Communities of Machu Picchu) have placed stones on the rail line, rendering it inoperable, in a call for greater opportunity to offer tourist services. PeruRail has issued a statement expressing that it cannot predict when services will be restored but that it will help affected customers.

It is possible that this blockade will continue in the coming days. Heightened security in the area is possible. Heavier traffic on roads between Cusco and Machu Picchu are likely, leading to further travel delays.
