Emerging reports indicate that artisanal miners have gathered in the vicinity of a gold mine operation, run by Endeavour Mining, in Hounde, Tuy Province, May 24, forcing some businesses to close amid tensions. Security forces have been deployed in the area. There have been no reported casualties as yet. The unrest is reportedly linked to the recent arrests of artisanal miners.

Similar unrest was reported May 17 as protesters attempted to set fire to the mine buildings and vehicles. Infrastructure damages have also been reported across the city, while schools and businesses closed temporarily.
