Warning

Event

Power outages are ongoing throughout the provinces of Ontario and Quebec, Canada, as of May 24, following a powerful and deadly storm in the region, May 21. As of early May 24, reports indicate close to 230,000 customers in Ontario, especially in the eastern part of the province, remain without electricity, as well as 130,000 in Quebec, mostly in western Quebec. Authorities indicate the storm left major damage to the electric system, including 1,400 broken poles and 200 damaged transformers, which is delaying the resumption of energy in the provinces.

Fuel shortages have also been reported in certain areas, especially in the Ottawa region, as many fuel stations were affected by the storm, and supplies have been delayed in others.

Authorities have confirmed that 10 people were killed. Some communities, including Clarence-Rockland, near Ottawa, and Uxbridge, near Toronto, have declared a state of emergency as damages are assessed and recovery operations are ongoing.

Power outages and fuel shortages are likely to continue through at least May 25. Shortages of other basic goods are possible.

Advice

Strictly heed instructions from authorities. Unplug electronic equipment that is not connected to surge protectors. Exercise caution when driving in areas affected by power outages.
