Warning

Event

Former militants affiliated with the Deprived Returnees Movement Committee (DMRC) have postponed a planned blockade of the Assam-Agartala Highway (National Highway 8) in Champaknagar, Tripura, from June 5 to June 21. The decision is due to scheduled talks with government officials. Participants had called for the action to demand benefits promised to militants who laid down their arms, while officials maintain the protesting group is not part of recognized surrenderers. If unaverted, the demonstration is likely to involve several dozen participants. Blockades at additional points along the highway are possible if the action is prolonged. Protesters may also gather at government buildings and public squares in Agartala.

Authorities will likely monitor protests and may try to disperse gatherings if they are especially disruptive. Clashes between protesters and police are possible; officials may use tear gas and water cannons to breaks up crowds. Localized transport disruptions are likely near protests. Security forces will likely divert traffic from impacted areas.

Champaknagar is located approximately 21 km (13 miles) east-southeast of central Agartala.

Advice

Avoid protests due to possible violence. If clashes break out, leave the area immediately. Follow all security personnel instructions. Do not try to cross roadblocks, as protesters may react violently. Allow additional travel time near protests.
