Event
Heavy rainfall has resulted in landslides and flooding across the Los Rios and Los Lagos regions as of June 7. In the Los Lagos Region, reports indicate that at least two roads in Puerto Montt Commune are impassable due to flooding and landslides. Authorities have suspended traffic on the road to Salto del Petrohue in Puerto Varas Commune, near the La Ventana area, due to flooding and landslides.
Flooding of a river in the San Juan area has blocked the T-400 Route connecting Valvidia and Corral communes in the Los Rios Region; around 5,300 people in Corral Commune are isolated. The Port of Corral is closed due to adverse weather conditions. Conditions are forecast to improve over the coming days.
Hazardous Conditions
Further rainfall could trigger flooding in low-lying communities near rivers, streams, and creeks. Urban flooding is also possible in developed areas with easily overwhelmed or a lack of stormwater drainage systems. Flooding could block regional rail lines; freight and passenger train delays and cancellations are possible in areas that see heavy rainfall and potential track inundation. Localized business disruptions may occur in low-lying areas.
Health
Flooding could heighten the threat of disease outbreaks. Backflow from drains mixed with floodwaters can become trapped in open areas when inundations recede. These stagnant pools often become a breeding ground for mosquitoes and bacteria, increasing the incidence of insect- and water-borne diseases. Exposure to contaminated water from inundated industrial sites, sewer systems, and septic tanks also poses a significant health threat.
