Iraq: Graduates in Nasiriyah likely to continue protests through at least end-June
Graduates in Nasiriyah, Iraq, likely to continue protests through at least end-June. Increased security, localized disruptions likely.
Event
College graduates will likely continue to protest in Nasiriyah, Dhi Qar Governorate, through at least end of June to demand more employment opportunities in the government sector. Prominent rally locations include Al Habobi Square, as well as Al-Zaytoun and Al-Nasr bridges. Protesters have frequently blocked traffic along both bridges with burning debris on previous occasions.
Authorities will likely maintain a heightened security posture in Nasiriyah through at least end-June. Transport disruptions are likely near any demonstrations that may materialize, particularly near prominent rally sites. Security forces may respond forcefully and deploy the use of tear gas, water cannon, and baton charges if participants are overly disruptive or fail to heed orders to disperse.
Advice
Avoid all large gatherings, as well as areas where security forces have deployed. Plan accordingly for ground transport disruptions and allow extra time to reach destinations in Nasiriyah, especially near likely protest locations. Heed the instructions of security personnel. If violence breaks out nearby, leave the area immediately and seek shelter in a secure, non-government building.
