Peru: Authorities extend state of emergency in Lima and El Callao through Aug. 2 /update 3

Authorities in Peru have extended a previously declared state of emergency in Lima and El Callao through Aug. 2 as part of efforts to fight organized crime. During the state of emergency, the armed forces will assist police in patrolling the two cities. Moreover, security forces may conduct searches and arrests without warrants.

A heightened police and military presence is likely across Lima and El Callao, especially in central Lima, the port area of El Callao, and low-income neighborhoods where crime is a particular concern. Business and transport disruptions are possible as security forces conduct searches of cargo and vehicles.
