Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca, Saudi Arabia, to occur July 7-12. Increased security, transport disruptions likely through at least July 15.

Warning

Event

The annual Hajj (pilgrimage) to Mecca, Saudi Arabia, will occur July 7-12; exact dates may vary by one or two days, depending on local lunar sightings. Millions of Muslims typically participate in the Hajj each year; one million international and domestic pilgrims have been allowed to participate in 2022. The number has historically been much higher; however, authorities have placed a limit on the number of pilgrims due to concerns over the spread of COVID-19.

To partake in Hajj this year, individuals must be under 65 years of age and fully vaccinated against COVID-19. International pilgrims are required to submit a negative COVID-19 test result that has been taken within 72 hours before departure for the kingdom.

Access to holy sites at Mona, Muzdalifah, and Arafat will be limited to those with Hajj permits for the duration of the pilgrimage. Increased security and localized transport disruptions are likely in the vicinity of the holy sites.

The majority of pilgrims will likely fly into King Abdulaziz International Airport (JED) in Jeddah and Prince Mohammad bin Abdulaziz International Airport (MED) in Medina. The airports are equipped to deal with the large influx of travelers, and additional security personnel and first responders will deploy throughout Mecca and Medina provinces. Delays at MED or JED may also affect airline networks at King Khalid International Airport (RUH) in Riyadh and King Fahd International Airport (DMM) in Dammam.

Hajj visa holders are limited to traveling between Jeddah, Medina, and Mecca, with non-Muslims being prohibited from entering Mecca and central Medina. Hence, the operational impact outside of those cities will likely be minimal.

Advice

Plan for localized travel disruptions near holy sites in the vicinity of Mecca and Medina for the duration of the pilgrimage. Government and many corporate offices will close or have reduced operating hours during Hajj. Confirm flight reservations well in advance of travel to Saudi Arabia; particularly to Mecca and Medina provinces. Allow for extra time to clear customs and security checkpoints.

Follow all official instructions. Abide by national health and safety measures. Reconfirm all business appointments and travel arrangements. Liaise with trusted contacts for further updates and guidance. Ensure contingency plans account for further disruptive measures or extensions of current restrictions.
