Nigeria: Activists call for nationwide protests in solidarity with ongoing teacher strike July 26, 27

Nigeria Labour Congress calls for nationwide protests July 26, 27 in solidary with ongoing strike by university teachers.

Informational

Event

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called for nationwide protests July 26 and 27 in solidarity with a work stoppage by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU). ASUU teachers have been on indefinite strike since Feb. 14 after the government failed to implement several demands. Participants will gather at NLC secretariats in state capitals, while the starting point will be located at the Labour House in Abuja. Organizers have not yet announced specific gathering times. It is unclear how many participants the events may draw. Larger gatherings will likely take place in major urban centers such as Abuja, Lagos, and Port Harcourt. Other unions may join the movement, increasing the scale of the protests.

Security forces will certainly deploy to monitor large gatherings; violence cannot be ruled out if police forcibly disperse crowds. Traffic and business disruptions are likely near all protest sites.

Advice

Anticipate traffic and business disruptions on July 26 and 27. Avoid all demonstrations and leave the area at the first sign of a confrontation. Monitor local media for further updates regarding gathering times and locations.
