Taiwan to hold annual military exercises July 25-29. Plan for heightened security, transport disruptions.

Warning

Event

Taiwan will hold the Wan An air-raid drills and the 38th Han Kuang military exercise July 25-29. The annual Wan An air-raid drills will occur in various locations islandwide 13:30-14:00 on the following dates:

  • July 25: Greater Taipei, Taoyuan, and Hsinchu City and Yilan and Hsinchu counties

  • July 26: Taichung and Chiayi cities and Miaoli, Changhua, Nantou, Yunlin, and Chiayi counties

  • July 27: Tainan, Kaohsiung, and Pingtung County

  • July 28: Hualien, Taitung, Penghu, Kinmen, and Lienchiang counties

During the air-raid drills, officials will suspend most transport and pedestrian movement for 30 minutes. Individuals must remain indoors or move to local shelters, and motorists must pull to the side of the road. The drill will not impact highway traffic or metro services, but users must comply with regulations in all other locations, including when disembarking from train stations. Authorities could issue fines up to TWD 150,000 (USD 5,000) for noncompliance.

The military will conduct the live-fire portion of the 38th Han Kuang military drill in parts of northern Taiwan July 25-29. Simulations featuring joint maneuvers will occur at the Port of Taipei, Tamsui River estuary, Guandu Bridge, and various government buildings in Taipei. Additional events are possible in other parts of northern Taiwan.

Heightened security is likely in major cities; military, law enforcement, and emergency service personnel will participate in the exercises. The drills may prompt localized ground transport disruptions. The Han Kuang exercise could cause delays at the Port of Taipei.

Advice

Heed all official instructions. Consider limiting movement in areas undergoing air-rail drills. Carry proper documentation. Exercise caution and allow additional time to reach destinations, including after air-raid drills conclude. Plan for potential shipping congestion and delays. Do not travel to or route shipments through the Port of Taipei without verifying onward transport. Use alternative shipping methods for time-sensitive freight.
