Peru: Transport and agricultural workers' strike and related protests likely to continue into late July /update 1

Various unions and other organizations representing transport and agricultural workers are likely to continue to strike and stage related protests across Peru into late July. The purpose of the labor actions is to demand that the government tackle rising fuel prices, eliminate the Selective Consumption Tax, and address what strike participants view as unfair competition from foreign carriers. The continuing work stoppage and demonstrations are an extension of a one-day strike held July 18; while some workers who participated in the July 18 strike have since returned to their duties, others have called for indefinite demonstrations.

Protest activity and roadblocks have notably been reported in Ayacucho, Cajamarca, Junin, Lambayeque, Lima, Moquegua, Piura, Puno, San Martin, Tacna, and Tumbes departments. Additional demonstrations and blockades are possible in these and other areas across the country for as long as the strike continues.

Strike-related disruptions to public transit, freight transportation, and business are likely. Police will probably deploy to demonstration sites. Clashes cannot be ruled out, especially if authorities attempt to forcibly disperse protesters.
