Iraq: Further demonstrations likely in urban centers through late July to condemn alleged Turkish artillery strikes in Zakho District, July 20 /update 1

Further protests across major Iraqi cities likely through late July after alleged Turkish artillery strikes in Zakho District, July 20.

Warning

Event

Additional protests across major Iraqi cities condemning alleged Turkish artillery strikes on July 20 remain likely through late July. Demonstrations materialized in multiple cities July 20-21 after IRaqi officials stated that Turkish artillery strikes killed at least eight people and wounded some 23 others at a resort in Zakho District, Duhok Governorate, July 20. Demonstrators have gathered around Turkish diplomatic facilities in Baghdad, Karbala, and Najaf to condemn the attack. Police will likely remain deployed to monitor the demonstrations.

Heightened security and localized transport disruptions are likely around the protest sites over the coming hours and days. Clashes between protesters and security forces cannot be ruled out, especially if police attempt to disperse demonstrators forcibly.

Context

Turkey has denied the Iraqi government's claims that it was responsible for the attack, a move that will likely trigger additional protests. Ankara regularly launches operations and airstrikes in northern Iraq to clamp down on the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK). In mid-April, Turkey launched Operation Claw Lock with air and artillery strikes targeting areas held by PKK fighters in the Metina, Zap, and Avasin-Basyan regions. Turkish authorities stated that they launched the operation to preempt a large-scale attack by the PKK.

Advice

Avoid all protests. Consider taking alternative routes to circumvent demonstration sites. If violence breaks out, seek shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building. Adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.
