Iraq: Missile attack reportedly targets vicinity of Turkish consulate in Mosul July 27
Missile attack reportedly targets vicinity of Turkish consulate in Mosul, Iraq, July 27. No immediate reports of casualties.
Event
Iraqi sources reported that two missiles targeted the vicinity of the Consulate of Turkey in Mosul early July 27. While some vehicles have been damaged, there have been no immediate reports of casualties in the incident. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
Increased security and localized transport disruptions are likely in the vicinity of the Consulate of Turkey through at least the afternoon of July 27 as authorities investigate and respond to the incident. Additional attacks remain possible over the short term.
Context
The incident comes after the Iraqi government asserted that Turkey was responsible for artillery strikes that killed at least eight people and wounded some 23 others in a resort area in Zakho District, Duhok Governorate, July 20. Turkey, however, has denied responsibility for the attack. Ankara regularly launches operations and airstrikes in northern Iraq to clamp down on the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK). In mid-April, Turkey launched Operation Claw Lock with air and artillery strikes targeting areas held by PKK fighters in the Metina, Zap, and Avasin-Basyan regions. Turkish authorities stated that they launched the operation to preempt a large-scale attack by the PKK.
Advice
Avoid the vicinity of the Consulate of Turkey until authorities give the all-clear. Heed the instructions of local security personnel. If incoming artillery fire is reported in the general vicinity, stay indoors, away from windows and exterior walls. If possible, move to a ground floor or basement. Maintain contact with your country's diplomatic mission.
