Guinea: Unruly demonstration in Conakry July 29

Event

Activists from the opposition National Front for the Defense of the Constitution (FNDC) are protesting in Conakry July 29. Protesters have reportedly set up barricades on the highway crossing the Cosa-Bambeto-Kolemi neighborhoods. Participants have reportedly thrown stones at security forces, who have used tear gas to disperse protesters. The demonstration comes a day after a protest in the capital during which one person was killed and several others injured. A similar protest is scheduled Aug. 4. The demonstrations have been called to denounce a current ban on protests and to demand a return to civilian rule.

The National Committee of Reconciliation and Development (CNRD) announced a ban on gatherings May 13 and said it will remain in place until the start of the election cycle, likely in 2025.
