Armed bandits, locally known as Dahalo, raided the village of Ambohitriniandriana in the district of Ankazobe, Analamanga Region, Jul. 29, killing up to 32 people. Around 12 assailants set fire to several houses in the village before fleeing. Security forces have deployed to the area to hunt down the perpetrators.

Ambohitriniandriana is located about about 75 km (47 mi) from the capital of Antananarivo.

Increased security measures are likely to persist in the area in the near term as further attacks are possible. Security forces may erect additional checkpoints, restrict gatherings, or in the case of further violence, enforce a curfew or other movement restrictive measures.

Context

The district of Ankazobe, which regularly faces bandit attacks, is classified as a red zone by local authorities for insecurity and cattle theft.
