A magnitude-4.4 earthquake occurred near the California-Nevada border around 13:44 PST Aug. 8. The epicenter was approximately 8 km (5 miles) northeast of Walker, California. The tremor occurred at a depth of about 5.1 km (3 miles), and weak-to-light shaking was probably felt throughout much of the area. There have been no initial reports of damage or casualties resulting from the earthquake; however, significant damage is unlikely. It could take several hours until authorities can conduct comprehensive damage assessments, especially in remote areas. Light aftershocks are likely over the coming days.
