Officials in Montenegro are responding to a cyberattack that is targeting the government's digital infrastructure and services as of Aug. 26. Authorities have temporarily disabled certain services, including electricity provision for some clients, to mitigate the risk associated with the attack, which began late Aug. 25; officials have claimed that citizens' and companies' accounts and data have not been compromised. The US Embassy in Podgorica accordingly issued a security alert Aug. 26, asserting that the cyberattack may disrupt public utilities, telecommunications, and transport, including at airports and border crossings. The US Embassy has also advised individuals to refrain from nonessential movement and travel. Montenegro's Agency for National Security (ANB) has claimed that Russian services are responsible for the cyberattack.

Related disruptions may impact various services and sectors in Montenegro through late August. Additional cyberattacks targeting governmental institutions and critical services cannot be ruled out over the short term.
