A roadside improvised explosive device (IED) targeted an escorted supply vehicle convoy along the Bourzanga-Djibo highway (N22) late Sept. 5. The attack killed 35 people and wounded 37 others; according to authorities, all of the casualties were civilians. No militant group has as yet claimed responsibility for the attack; however, native Jihadi militants have regularly attacked civilians and security forces in the region in recent months.

An increased security presence is likely in the area over the coming days. Further attacks in Burkina Faso's border regions are likely for the foreseeable future.

Context

The attack on Sept. 5 highlights the severe insecurity and risk of militant attacks across much of Burkina Faso. Islamic militants operating in the border regions continue to perpetrate such attacks and are usually the primary suspects. Armed bandits have also contributed to the deteriorating security environment.

Exercise a high degree of vigilance if operating in Burkina Faso due to the threat of attacks. Travel in convoys, during daylight hours, and with a security escort following a full review of the route. Do not disclose itineraries. Maintain contact with your diplomatic representation.
