Chad: Unionized public and private sector employees to stage nationwide general strike Sept. 7-9

The Federation of Trade Unions of Chad (Union des Syndicats du Tchad, UST) plans to stage a nationwide general strike Sept. 7-9 amid wage and tax disagreements. UST leaders have called upon members working in both the public and private sectors to walk off the job during the labor action. The nation's petroleum sector union PETROSYNAT has also announced its intent to take part in the work stoppage. No minimum level of service will be guaranteed at hospitals during the strike.

Unless averted at the last minute, the three-day work stoppage will likely impact public services and private sector business operations across Chad. Fuel delivery disruptions are also likely. Although union leaders have not announced any specific plans for gatherings, striking workers could stage protests with little warning.
