Pakistan: Officials to heighten security nationwide for Chehlum Sept. 17

Officials will heighten security across Pakistan for the Shi'a observance of Chehlum Sept. 17. Worshippers will stage processions to and from imambargahs (traditional Shi'a congregation halls), mosques, and other sites. Authorities will deploy security personnel around Shi'a religious sites and near procession routes, especially in major urban centers, such as Islamabad, Karachi, and Lahore. While authorities have not disclosed any specific threats, Sunni militant organizations may target Shi'a minority gatherings.

Security personnel will establish checkpoints on major roadways and increase security at malls, markets, and other soft targets as a precaution. Road closures and traffic restrictions are probable. Processions and corresponding official traffic advisories could prompt severe traffic delays and business disruptions, especially in areas with significant Shi'a populations. Violence is possible in many areas, particularly in major cities. Religious groups may protest if local authorities ban any planned events; isolated sectarian clashes are also possible.
