Nigeria: Students protesting near Lagos' Murtala Muhammed International Airport Sept. 19

Students affiliated with the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) are protesting along Airport Road in the vicinity of Lagos’s Murtala Muhammed International Airport (LOS) Sept. 19.

There is a heightened security presence in the area. Ground transport disruptions will likely persist over the coming hours; access to and from LOS may be obstructed. Clashes with security forces remain possible if protesters ignore police orders to disperse or attempt to block access to LOS.

Context

NANS has carried out nationwide disruptive actions in recent months to demand the resumption of academic activities amid an ongoing teacher's strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU). Organizers will likely continue to encourage students to continue disruptive actions until academic activities resume. NANS representatives had recently threatened to block airports across the country.
