Activists to rally in several cities in Australia Sept. 22 against the monarchy. Increased security likely; traffic disruptions possible.

Informational

Event

Activists are protesting in several cities Sept. 22 against the British monarchy and to press other grievances of the Aboriginal population. Indigenous groups Warriors of the Aboriginal Resistance (WAR) and Fighting in Solidarity Towards Treaties (FISTT) organized the demonstrations, and dozens to a few hundred people may participate in the gatherings. The following demonstrations are taking place:

  • Brisbane: Activists gathered at Queen Elizabeth Park and will march to Eagle Street.

  • Canberra: Rally occurring opposite Old Parliament House.

  • Melbourne: Protesters are rallying at Biarrarung Marr as of 13:30. March to Parliament House planned.

  • Sydney: Demonstrators gathered at Sydney Town Hall.

Authorities will likely monitor the protest and could block roads in the vicinity to facilitate marches that occur. The events are unlikely to result in violence, but minor skirmishes between protesters and police cannot be ruled out, particularly if activists attempt to bypass any security cordons. Localized transport disruptions are likely near marches.

Advice

Exercise caution near protest sites and along march routes. If violence breaks out, leave the area immediately. Follow all security personnel instructions. Allow additional travel time near rallies.
