Protests against Iranian government likely in Australia through late September Increased security likely.

Informational

Event

Activists plan to rally in multiple locations through September in support of ongoing anti-government protesters in Iran. Activists have held related protests in multiple cities, including Adelaide, Melbourne, Perth, and Sydney. Groups have called for the following protests in the coming days:

Sept. 27

Canberra: Parliament House, 14:00

Sept. 28

Parramatta: Church Street, 18:00

Organizers may also call for protests in other cities. The largest gatherings are likely in major cities and towns, where dozens to a few hundred people may gather. Likely protest sites include government buildings and public squares. Protesters may also march along roadways.

Security personnel will likely monitor protests and may try to break up especially disruptive gatherings. Skirmishes between protesters and police are possible. Protests and resultant security responses may prompt localized transport disruptions.

Context

Civil unrest has been occurring across Iran to denounce the death of Mahsa Amini, who died in police custody after being arrested Sept. 13 for allegedly violating Iran's dress code laws.

Advice

Avoid protests due to possible clashes. If violence breaks out, leave the area immediately. Follow all security personnel instructions. Allow additional travel time near gatherings.
