Further intercommunal violence is possible in central Chad over the coming days after clashes between pastoral herders and local farmers left at least 11 people dead and several wounded in the Mangalmé Department, Guera Region, Sept. 30. Police were deployed to the area and subsequently came under assault by individuals on horseback. Local officials call for increased security measures to avoid further incidences of violence.

Heightened security is almost certain in the area over the coming days. Further clashes are possible. Officials could impose movement restrictive measures, such as curfews, should further violence occur.

Context

Intercommunal violence over land use and water rights between agricultural-based communities and nomadic pastoral herders is a frequent issue in rural Chad. Southern and central regions of the country have experienced recurrent incidents of related violence, resulting in numerous fatalities. Intercommunal conflict is often worsened by adverse weather conditions, such as drought and flooding, which can result in irregular crop harvests.
