Thailand: Activists plan to demonstrate in multiple cities Oct. 6

Activists to stage rallies across Thailand Oct. 6. Increased security likely; localized transport and business disruptions possible.

Activists in Thailand plan to protest nationwide Oct. 6 to commemorate the anniversary of the October 1976 massacre in Bangkok’s Thammasat University that left at least 40 people killed.

In Bangkok, organizers have announced the following events:

  • Thammasat University's Tha Prachan campus: Activists will gather from 07:00 to 20:00.

  • Kasetsart University: Demonstrations to meet beginning 17:30.

  • Chulalongkorn University: Organizers to rally between 18:30-19:00.

  • Bangkok City Hall courtyard: Participants will congregate from 14:30 to 20:00.

  • Nawamintrathirat University: Activists to meet from 18:30.

  • Kinjai Contemporary art gallery: the start time remains immediately unclear.

Activists have planned further demonstrations in the following cities:

  • Chiang Mai Province: Event will commence at Chiang Mai University; 13:00-16:00

  • Khon Kaen Province: Activists to gather at Khon Kaen University 16:00-20:00.

  • Nakhon Pathom Province: Demonstrators will gather at Silpakorn University’s Sanam Chan Palace Campus beginning 19:40 and Mahidol University in Salaya from 16:00 to 18:35.

  • Pathum Thani Province: Activists will gather at the Thammasat University’s Rangsit Center around 17:00.

  • Phitsanulok Province: Organizers plan to congregate at Naresuan University from 17:30.

  • Ubon Ratchathani Province: Rally to begin in Ubon Ratchathani University at 18:00.

Additional events are possible near major educational institutions, public squares, monuments, government buildings, and roadways nationwide. Authorities will likely monitor any demonstrations and may attempt to disperse especially disruptive gatherings. Isolated clashes between activists and police cannot be ruled out. Demonstrators may block and/or march along roadways, prompting localized transport disruptions. Localized business disruptions are possible.

Plan accordingly for traffic congestion and allow additional time for travel if transiting near the impacted cities through the evening of Oct. 6.
