Czech Republic, Slovakia: Czech authorities to extend temporary border controls at crossings with Slovakia Oct. 8-28 /update 1

Czech authorities to extend temporary border controls at crossings with Slovakia Oct. 8-28; border crossing disruptions likely.

Informational

Event

Authorities in the Czech Republic will extend checks at the land border with Slovakia until at least Oct. 28 due to concerns regarding a significant increase in illegal immigration. The measure was first introduced on Sept. 29 for a 10-day period. Border control checks are not usually carried out at this border as both the Czech Republic and Slovakia are in the Schengen Area.

Czech officials state checks will be reinstated at 17 road crossings, seven railway crossings, and three river crossings; other crossing points will be impassable. Exceptions are in place for farmers, foresters, hunters, and fishermen. The additional checks will likely result in minor border crossing delays for individuals and goods entering the Czech Republic from Slovakia.

Advice

Ensure all appropriate documentation is in order and confirm the status of border crossing points prior to travel if entering or shipping goods to the Czech Republic from Slovakia. Anticipate disruption, including possible queues and delays, at border checkpoints.
