Shortages affecting fuel stations in Ho Chi Minh City and several southern provinces in Vietnam as of Oct. 11. Disruptions possible.

Informational

Event

Fuel shortages are ongoing in Ho Chi Minh City and several southern provinces, including An Giang, Binh Duong, Dong Nai, Dong Thap, and Kien Giang as of Oct. 11. The shortages began in Ho Chi Minh Oct. 6 after petrol supplier COMECO ran out of fuel to sell to commuters due to scarcity and rising fuel prices. Around 121 stations in Ho Chi Minh, mainly located in District 12 and Binh Chanh, Binh Tan, Go Vap, Tan Binh, and Thu Duc City areas, have reportedly run out of fuel. Additional petrol station closures are possible in the coming days if the shortages and high prices continue. Increased demand is likely at stations still selling fuel; service delays are probable. Long queues have been reported at the affected fuel stations. Public transportation services may be affected.

Related protests are possible if higher fuel prices and shortages persist. The largest gatherings are likely to occur near government buildings, public squares, and major roadways, causing localized transport disruptions. Police will likely monitor any protests that may materialize and attempt to disperse them if they become disruptive. Clashes between protesters and police are possible.

Advice

Plan for possible fuel shortages and long wait times at gas stations. Confirm all transport services in advance. Avoid any protests due to possible violence. If clashes break out, leave the area immediately. Heed all advice of security personnel. Allow additional travel time near protests.
