Freight and travel disruptions in major South African cities amid ongoing Transnet workers' strike, Oct. 11. Violence possible.

Warning

Event

Major disruptions to merchandise transport are ongoing in Bloemfontein, Cape Town, Durban, and Johannesburg as the Transnet workers' strike continues Oct. 11. Protests are reportedly being held near Transnet ports in Cape Town, Saldanha, and Durban. A mediation process is ongoing at the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) in Johannesburg.

South African Transport and Allied Workers Union (SATAWU) joined the action on Oct. 10. Transnet declared "force majeure" as the United National Transport Union (UNTU) affiliated workers began striking Oct. 6. Unions are demanding a salary increase between 12 and 13.5 percent, while Transnet has so far offered between 3 and 4 percent. Transnet is a majority state-owned entity that manages freight rail transport, ports, and pipelines.

Additional demonstrations could occur in other major cities. Delays in deliveries of cargo are likely. Associated demonstrations by strike workers are likely to continue near Transnet sites. Police are likely to close road routes near protest sites. Clashes could occur.

Advice

Plan for freight and transport delays. Reconfirm business appointments at Transnet offices and facilities. Avoid all protests.
