Burkina Faso: US Embassy warns of pro-government demonstrations in Ouagadougou Oct. 13-15

US Embassy warns of pro-government demonstrations in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, Oct. 13-15. Avoid all demonstrations.

Warning

Event

The US Embassy in Ouagadougou issued a security alert Oct. 12, warning of demonstrations in the city Oct. 13-15. According to the alert, a demonstration in support of Captain Ibrahim Traore will take place at Place de la Nation Oct. 13, while the Oct. 14-15 demonstrations are expected to take place in front of the International Convention Center in the Ouaga 2000 district of the capital. The exact times for the protests remain unclear as of Oct. 13. The rallies have been called amid a national stakeholders' event, during which an interim president should be appointed until the next democratic elections, scheduled in two years.

A heightened security presence is likely Oct. 13-15 in Ouagadougou. Localized business and transportation disruptions are likely. Skirmishes between rival activist groups or protesters and police, as well as acts of vandalism, arson, and looting, are possible.

Context

Troops led by Captain Ibrahim Traore ousted the ruling military junta headed by Lieutenant-Colonel Paul-Henri Damiba Sept. 30, dissolving the Burkinabe government. Coup leaders assert the overthrow was due to Damiba's alleged pursuit of his own political interests and failure to deal with the nation's deteriorating security situation, in addition to disagreements over who should partner with Burkina Faso in its fight against terrorism. Damiba had seized control of the country's government in a military coup in January.

Advice

Avoid all demonstrations as such gatherings can quickly become confrontational and escalate into violence with little warning. Maintain contact with diplomatic representations and heed all instructions issued by local authorities. Avoid government buildings, security installations, and large concentrations of police and soldiers. Remain courteous and cooperative if approached and questioned by security personnel.
