France: Unionized workers plan nationwide multi-sector strike Oct. 17-18

Unionized workers plan multi-sector strikes across France, Oct. 17-18. Travel disruptions likely.

Warning

Event

Several major labor unions, including CGT, Solidaires, and Force Ouvriere, are calling for a general strike Oct. 17-18. The action has been called to protect the right to strike and to demand improved wages.

In the public transport sector, a strike by train maintenance workers in Paris Oct. 17 will likely disrupt high-speed TGV, Thalys, and Eurostar rail services. RER and Transiliens drivers affiliated with the Sud-Rail Paris Nord union will also strike Oct. 17. Unionized French National Railways (SNCF) workers will observe strike action on Oct. 18. Metro, train, bus, and tram traffic will likely experience moderate to significant disruption in Paris and across the country Oct. 18.

In the energy sector, the National Federation of Mines and Energy (FNME-CGT) is calling on members to strike Oct. 18. The strike will affect workers at nuclear power stations, likely delaying the return of several nuclear plants to full operation ahead of winter.

Public sector workers affiliated with CGT will also observe strike action Oct. 18-31; however, it is unclear how well observed the strike will be in this sector.

The strike will likely result in increased traffic congestion and demand for taxis as commuters resort to the use of privately owned vehicles or other modes of transportation. Some local or federal government offices could close or operate on reduced schedules.

Although labor leaders have announced no specific plans for strike-related rallies, demonstrations are possible in cities nationwide on the affected days. Likely locations for protests are central squares, government offices, and hospitals. Additional police will likely deploy to monitor all protests; related security measures may lead to localized transport disruptions. Any protests that may materialize will likely remain largely peaceful.

Advice

Confirm public transportation schedules before travel and allow extra time to complete journeys Oct. 17-18. Make alternative travel arrangements if necessary. Confirm business meetings and appointments at government agencies and medical facilities. Avoid all demonstrations as a routine security precaution and to mitigate associated disruptions.
